How to Choose the Right Waterproof Breathable Membrane | Aotelong Guide

Start with the assembly, not the data sheet

A contractor once asked us why a membrane with an impressive water column rating had left condensation stains on the insulation behind a steel-frame wall. The membrane was not faulty; it was simply too vapour-tight for a building that produced a lot of indoor moisture. The right waterproof breathable membrane is the one that matches the structure, the climate and the position of the membrane in the building envelope. Define those three things first, and the rest of the selection process becomes much simpler.

This guide explains the two working mechanisms behind these membranes, the five performance values that deserve attention on a data sheet, and the application details that usually determine whether the product performs well after installation.

How a waterproof breathable membrane works

A waterproof breathable membrane must perform two opposing jobs at the same time. It has to stop liquid water from entering the building, and it has to let water vapour escape from the inside. Two film technologies achieve this in different ways.

Hydrophobic microporous films

Microporous membranes contain a network of pores so small that liquid water cannot pass through them because of surface tension, while water vapour molecules can still diffuse outward. In most building underlays, this microporous film is laminated onto a nonwoven or woven carrier that provides tensile strength, tear resistance and manageable handling on site. The manufacturer's control over the lamination process is what determines the final balance between waterproofing and vapour openness.

Monolithic hydrophilic films

Monolithic films are dense and contain no pores. They absorb water vapour on the warm side of the film, transport it through the polymer structure by molecular diffusion, and release it on the cold side. Vapour transmission rates tend to be lower than those of a well-engineered microporous membrane, but the continuous film also blocks dust and air. This technology appears most often in vapour-permeable tapes and specialist roofing products rather than in whole-wall underlays.

For most wall and roof projects, the practical choice is a composite underlay: a microporous film on a strong nonwoven substrate. The ATL breathable membrane series from Jiangsu Aotelong New Materials follows this composite construction, and the company's building range includes both low-permeability and high-permeability versions of its waterproof breathable membrane. The correct level of vapour openness depends on the drying strategy of the wall.

The five performance values that matter

When you compare membranes, five figures on the test report cover most of what you need to know. They are hydrostatic water resistance, water vapour permeability, tensile strength, tear resistance and UV stability. Each one answers a different question about how the membrane will behave once it is fixed to a frame.

A practical way to read a membrane data sheet: the first two values define protection and drying capability; the last three define reliability during and after installation.
CriteriaWhat to look forWhy it matters
Hydrostatic water resistanceWater column in millimetres; most wall underlays start around 1,000 mmStops wind-driven rain from reaching the insulation and the structure
Water vapour permeabilityg/m²/24h or an Sd value in European datasheetsDetermines how quickly the wall can dry if moisture enters the cavity
Tensile strengthValues in both machine and cross directionPrevents tearing during installation and from wind suction on the sheet
Tear resistanceForce needed to continue a tear, not just start oneLimits damage around fasteners and small punctures
UV stabilityNumber of months the film can stay exposedCovers the period between installation and closing in the facade

In Europe, vapour permeability is often expressed as an Sd value or grouped into performance classes rather than given as a simple gram-per-square-metre figure. Both systems describe the same behaviour, so the key step is to specify the drying requirement of the wall first, then confirm that the selected product meets it. A ventilated facade usually calls for a high-permeability membrane; a low-permeability product may be more appropriate where the design requires a tighter internal layer.

Within the Aotelong range, the T150 waterproof breathable membrane in the T-series sits between the lighter and heavier options, which is why it is often chosen for walls where handling weight and mechanical strength need to stay in balance.

Match the membrane to the application

Data sheets rarely reveal the differences that become obvious after installation. The structure type, roof pitch and installation sequence all affect which membrane is right for a specific project.

Vented and rainscreen walls

In a rainscreen wall, the outer cladding sits on the outside of a ventilated cavity, and the membrane works as the last weather layer in front of the insulation. It must resist wind-driven rain while allowing vapour from the warm side to escape into the cavity. A high-permeability membrane is the normal starting point. On steel or timber frames, the membrane also needs enough width to span the spacing between posts and enough robustness to survive the movements of other trades on site.

Roof underlays

Roof underlays face harsher conditions than wall membranes. Wind suction is higher, water collects around flashings and in valleys, and the sheet may remain exposed to sunlight while the roof covering is installed in stages. Tensile strength and UV stability therefore deserve more weight in the evaluation. The heavier T260 waterproof breathable membrane, the top grade in the T-series, was developed for situations where mechanical stress and exposure during installation are genuinely high.

Sealing the laps

A membrane is only as effective as its overlaps. Most modern installations use self-adhesive tape on the laps, and the tape must be compatible with the surface film of the membrane. On the outer weather side, a breathable tape preserves the vapour openness of the joint; where an airtight seal is required on the warm side, a vapour barrier tape is the correct choice. Installation temperature matters too. Cold weather reduces adhesion, and every tape manufacturer publishes a minimum application temperature for a reason.

This is also the point where the distinction between weatherproof layer and vapour-control layer becomes clear. On the outside of the insulation, the membrane keeps weather out and lets the wall dry. On the warm side, a separate vapour barrier stops indoor humidity from entering the insulation in the first place. They are complementary products, not substitutes. A broader explanation of how different waterproofing methods are combined in a building envelope is available in our industry note on different types of waterproofing in construction.

Check the supplier as carefully as the product

Once the specification is clear, supply chain quality becomes the main variable. Look for independent factory inspections and product approvals. Jiangsu Aotelong New Materials, for example, has passed factory inspections by ICC-ES and BBA, and its construction membranes carry CE marking and BBA certification. For export projects, certificates are checked locally during the approval stage, so this documentation is a practical signal, not a marketing claim.

Production consistency is the second thing to verify. A membrane can pass one laboratory test and still vary in film thickness, adhesion strength or roll width from batch to batch. Ask whether the manufacturer controls the lamination process in its own factory rather than relying on a trading partner. The fact that the same company also produces medical nonwoven fabrics, where barrier performance and batch traceability are audited even more strictly, indicates the level of quality control applied across all production lines.

Finally, check whether the supplier can adapt the product to the project. Custom roll widths, a different balance between permeability and strength, or a special carrier fabric are common requests in this category. A manufacturer that also makes vapour barriers, reflective membranes and compatible window tapes can keep the entire envelope specification under one roof. That product strategy was visible at the BAU 2025 trade fair in Munich, where building envelope topics dominated the technical conversations with European specifiers.

The bottom line

Choosing a waterproof breathable membrane starts with the wall, not the catalogue. Define the structure, the climate and the position of the membrane in the envelope. Decide how much vapour must be allowed to escape to the outside. Confirm that the mechanical strength and UV resistance match the conditions on site during installation. Then verify that the supplier has the certifications and manufacturing control to deliver the same quality in every roll.

A membrane that fits the assembly and is installed according to the manufacturer's instructions will protect the building for the life of the facade. That is the real goal of the selection process.
