A waterproof breathable membrane sits on the outside of the sheathing, behind the cladding or roofing layer, and performs three distinct jobs. It blocks liquid water from wind-driven rain or snowmelt reaching the insulation and structure. It allows water vapour from inside to pass outward, so moisture does not condense in the cavity. And it acts as a wind barrier, reducing airflow through the insulation and improving the thermal performance of the assembly.

That combination is different from a vapour barrier, which stops vapour movement in one direction, or a reflective insulation, which reduces radiant heat transfer. The functional differences are the reason materials get mixed up on site, and why the consequences are expensive. Pre-Installation Checks That Prevent Most Failures

Start before the first roll is opened. Walk the substrate and verify five points:

  • The sheathing is structurally complete and the joints are closed.

  • No nails or screws protrude through the sheathing.
  • The framing allows the membrane to lie flat without hard twists.
  • Substrate repairs are finished before the membrane is unrolled.

Weather Limits for the Job

Do not install in heavy rain, snow, fog, or temperatures below 5°C when taped joints are part of the detail. Membrane surfaces and self-adhesive tapes lose peel adhesion at low temperature. A tape that sticks in the morning can lift by the afternoon, and a membrane installed in freezing conditions may not reach a reliable bond for weeks.

Storage and UV Protection

Keep rolls under cover, away from direct sunlight and standing water. Most waterproof breathable membranes have a UV exposure limit, often around four months of accumulated exposure for quality products, after which the outer surface degrades and becomes brittle. If the project schedule will not allow the cladding to follow within that window, plan a temporary protective layer. Step-by-Step Installation

Orientation and Start Point

Install the first course at the bottom of the wall and work upward, so each upper sheet laps over the sheet below it. Water then runs down the face of the wall without entering the overlap. On a roof, start at the eaves and work toward the ridge, lapping the upper roof course over the lower course. Check the direction arrows or printed guidance on the membrane itself before cutting.

Laps and Seams

Typical overlap values are 150 mm for horizontal laps and at least 100 mm for vertical butt joints, but the exact number comes from the product datasheet. A 25 mm shortcut on a lap, repeated over a whole elevation, is a hidden defect that no cladding will ever fix. Taped joints are the standard for airtightness. Fix the membrane along the top edge with cap nails, staples or temporary battens so the next course covers the line of fixings. Add face fixings sparingly, typically at 100–150 mm intervals along edges and one fastening per square metre in the field. Hold the membrane slightly slack. Excessive slack, however, creates folds where water can pool, so the aim is even tension, not stretch.

Detailing: Openings, Penetrations and Junctions

Most water ingress through a breather membrane happens at the details, not in the flat field. A window opening, a pipe penetration and a corner cut break the membrane's continuity, and the repair is only as good as the tape you use.

Window and Door Openings

Cut a diagonal from each corner of the opening, fold the membrane around the frame, and seal the folded laps with a breathable window tape designed for high-performance junctions. Pipes, Cables and Service Penetrations

For a pipe that exits the wall, cut a small slit, slide the membrane over the pipe, and seal the collar against the pipe surface with a compatible airtight tape or collar. Do not try to stretch the membrane around the pipe without cutting; the straining point will crack later. For cable clusters, use the same cut, dress and tape sequence.

Whatever grade you choose, order the matching tape from the same manufacturer and make sure the site team knows whether that tape is breathable or a vapour barrier. For opaque cladding over a ventilated gap, breathable tape is the right default. For junctions that must stop vapour, the vapour barrier tape is the only correct option. Quality Control Before the Cladding Goes On

Walk every elevation after the membrane is installed and before any battens or cladding cover it.
